Chapter 8: Loved
Summary:
Chapter eight begins with the Seeker assailing Wanderer with snide questions and comments while she is packing her rental car for a trip to Tuscan, AZ to see the healer Fords Deep Water. As the Seeker is speaking, Wanderer thinks about her options and comes to the conclusion that life without the Seeker is good incentive to relocate into another host body. She thought about all of the other planets and host species she had inhabited and the options there on Earth. She decides that she would like to experience more of this planet and all that it had to offer.
During the drive Wanderer let her mind coast with Melanie's as she drove. She believes that Melanie is reminiscing about happier times and places in her life as if she were saying goodbye. In Melanie's thoughts she remembers a place in the desert where Jared's father and his brothers built a cabin far from civilization. Jared had brought her and Jamie to stay there for a while. Jared told her it was home if she wanted it to be, and she did want it to be home. Later that same day, Jamie is sleeping. She and Jared are discussing the sleeping arrangements and she suggests to Jared that she could share the bed with him and Jamie could take the couch. She is very nervous and is afraid of Jared's reaction. Jared reacts by telling Melanie that she doesn't owe him that, but she replies that it wouldn't be out of obligation. He tells her that that he would rather die than be separated from her and she explains she feels the same way. However, Jared is concerned concerned that she is too young and that he would be taking advantage of her. Moreover, they had no methods for birth control and Jared stated that he does not want to bring children into this world as it is. When Jared tells Melanie they don't have to rush into anything they have plenty of time, she gets upset telling him that he can't know how much time they will have. Melanie then returns Wanderer to the present with a sigh and a thought of "You never know how much time you'll have."
