Melanie went into hiding with her brother Jamie when the invasion became known to her. She scavenged food from host houses, and met up with Jared on one of those raids. After capture, Melanie continued to be a conscious entity even after Wanderer's insertion. She never took total control of Wanderer's body during blackouts, like Kevin, but when Wanderer was weak from physical exertion or overwhelming emotion, Melanie managed to break through Wanderer's control.
